After several years working abroad as a surveyor and commercial diver in the international offshore marine construction industry, David Barrow came to the Florida Keys in 1980 as a surveyor with the large marine construction company contracted for fabricating and erecting
the new Seven Mile Bridge on the Overseas Highway (US Highway No. 1) in Marathon at Knight's Key, and constructing a major expansion to the containerized freight seaport in the Port of Miami, FL at Lummus Island.

The company eventually moved on. But he stayed, working his way instead into the surveying and diving fields in Miami and the Keys.
In 1994, on the occasion of the retirement of his long time employer and Keys Surveying mentor, Arnold McClenithan, he acquired Mr. McClenithan's work files (including partial records from colleagues & predecessors) and formed his own Surveying Company in Islamorada, on Plantation Key. When Hal Thomas, another veteran Keys Surveyor, retired in 2000, Barrow Surveying purchased his extensive records and the BSM office moved to the former Thomas building inTavernier, on Key Largo, Younger brother, Ken Barrow, also a lifelong surveyor, joined the company in its new location. Our Tavernier offices have been occupied by Land Surveyors since the 1970's when Frank Uherek worked out of them. The Thomas and McClenithan records, combined with our own 16+ years of records, make a unique, unexcelled archive of the history of land boundaries in these Keys. As a small firm, we use modern technologies such as robotics, satellite positioning, smart phones, cad, etc. as force multipliers. We also respect and appreciate past technologies and skills, and maintain a small, private "museum" of antique maps, globes and surveyor's instruments & tools, etc., at our office..
Believing in professional, as well as community and world involvement, we are active members of the professional societies listed in the left column, and we support the work of the following organizations through donation of funds and / or goods & services:
